In 1975, you would call your stockbrokers to pay as much as 1% in commission to buy 100 shares on the New York Stock Exchange. Wall Street made a lot of money from the fixed commission fee structure for 183 years. Investors had to call their brokers to place a trade. It used to be that placing a trade involved a phone call, a conversation with your broker, and waiting. But all this changed on May 1, 1975.
This date was known as “May Day” and it abolished fixed commissions. This did two things to benefit retail investors. First, it lowered the commission costs for retail investors. Second, the lower costs created more trading volume, which meant more liquidity to buy stocks. Reducing fixed regulations made the markets better. It took 50 years but now we can buy and sell stocks, commission-free.
